Education:
-
Qualifications:
GCSE’s: Canons High School: 1 A*, 5 A’s, 5 B’s, 2 C’s
A Levels: Biology, Chemistry, Geography. AS-Levels: Psychology. I was not sure what I wanted to be but I knew it was something science related. Although I really was interested in Mechanical Engineering, I wasn’t sure I wanted to study Maths. My Chemistry teacher at the time was a wonderful teacher and he had done a PhD in Biochemistry. He gave me an insight into the life of a researcher and I thought I might be good at it too!
BSc Biochemistry at King’s College London- this is a broad subject and I chose this as it had a range of subjects I thought I may like. During my undergraduate degree at King’s, I discovered my love and interest for immunology and infectious diseases.
MSc Medical Microbiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I really enjoyed my time here and meeting so many different people from around the world who have the same interests and passions as I do
PhD in Immunology in progress at King’s College London

Work History:
I worked in Sainsbury’s during most of my time at uni and it gave me a nice break from all the sciencey stuff.
After my master’s degree, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do a PhD so I took a year out to be a research assistant. I loved the project I worked on so much and was fortunate enough to be offered a PhD at the same place and here I am! Sometimes, I like to take some time out to teach students at undergraduate level. I really teaching students everything I have learned over the last few years
I also like to volunteer in my spare time. I have volunteered at the science museum (it’s very dark and spooky in the night when it is empty) and I have volunteered as a researcher in global health

Current Job:
I am a PhD student and graduate teaching assistant at King’s College London.

About Me:
I am a PhD student studying the immune system in cancer and I am based in London. When I am not in the lab, you can find me cycling and eating lots of sugary food (sometimes at the same time!)

I live in London, where I also study. In my spare time, I like to go to different parts of the UK to cycle around and discover new places. My favourite food is anything Mexican, I know every line to the musical Hamilton and I am a big Formula 1 fan.

There are a lot of treatments out there for cancer but some treatment works for some patients and not for others and I am trying to research why this happens. There could be a number of reasons why a treatment does not work on all patients. To study this, I look at and compare the immune system of patients who respond and do not respond to cancer treatment. I am also interested in whether certain bacteria in our body can affect whether treatment works in cancer patients.

My Typical Day:
Every day is different. My day can involve doing multiple experiments in the lab, teaching subjects to university students or doing some data analysis

I cycle to work every day. When I get into work, I check what I need to do for the day as this is generally different every day. I then warm up any chemicals I need for the day and start measuring patient samples and looking at the data. Seeing pretty colours and using magnets to help me identify the correct immune cells is always a highlight of the day.
Some days, I help to teach subjects to students studying at university which I also really enjoy.
