I think it is safe to say that nobody is one hundred percent sure about this.

But we think that the Earth’s climate changed over millions of years, this probably included volcanoes erupting and a lot of climate change. It was this change in climate that led to the dinos becoming extinct.

The current understanding is that the earth was hit by a large asteroid 66 million years ago. It was about 10 – 15km wide and hit the earth somewhere in Mexico. It made a huge crater, shockwaves and threw lots of debris into the atmosphere which changed the climate. About 75% of all animals died out at this time.

Well when we are young we are taught that a massive asteroid hit earth and wiped out all of the dinosaurs. In reality, its quite a lot more complex than that. When the asteroid arrived it changed the environment at the time into one in which the dinosaurs were not adapted as well as releasing debris, chemicals and potential toxins into the atmosphere. All of these changes contributed to making dinosaurs extinct. I still wonder what life would be like today if dinosaurs still existed?!

Most dinosaurs died 66 million years ago when a meteor hit the Earth somewhere around Mexico. This threw up a lot of dust and ash into the sky which blocked out the sun for years. The lack of sunlight caused many plants to die which caused plant-eating dinosaurs to die as they had no food. The meat-eating dinosaurs in turn had no food and then also died.
