Amnesia can result from damage to brain structures that form a part of the brain called the limbic system, which controls your emotions and memories.

The region of the brain involved in sight (the occipital lobe) is right at the back of the head. This is why you might see stars if you hit your head. So it turns out the cartoons of characters getting hit on the head with frying pans and seeing stars are right!
