It means Doctor of Philosophy, it’s why scientists with a PhD get called “Doctor”, its normally 3 to 4 years (in other countries its different) of research on a particular project, at the end of it if you have become an expert in the field!
It stands for ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ 🙂 The typical route to a PhD is you do your GCSE’s, then A-levels, then your undergraduate degree (bachelors degree – usually 3 years), then a Masters’ degree (usually 1 year in the UK), then you carry out a PhD.
Usually, a PhD is a research project you work on for 3-4 years and at the end you write up everything you’ve done then you have a viva (a really long meeting with 2 academics and they quiz you on your work and your thesis). If you pass this, you become a Doctor! (Not a medical doctor though – very different!!!! :D)
As other scientists have said, it is a qualification that you can obtain. On another note, a title such as Professor is something you apply for and can be appointed to. You usually need to have many years experience after your PhD and you need to demonstrate good quality research and teaching.

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the most common degree at the highest academic level awarded following a course of study.
In the UK, the national goal is to train an individual to ask new questions and to find new solutions.

It means that you discovered something new and can call yourself a Dr forevermore 🙂
