It makes me deeply sad when I think about the suffering it’s caused, there is no denying that it has been tough. However if I am to take some silver lining out of all this, I am given hope by how much our health services and science community has been able to achieve, from all the treatment of COVID patients, establishing virus testing centres, and development and generation of a vaccine all in such a remarkably short time. It has shown the skill, hard work, and dedication of a lot really impressive people.

It’s horrible for many many people and the long term impact will be huge. I am sad that a pandemic was on the cards for a while but there didn’t seem to be any planning for it. I try to be positive though and thing about some of the positive things that it has brought, a great sense of community, more willingness and openness and a change to more flexible working.

The pandemic has been tough on all of us, and to a large degree it still is. It is very sad that so many people have died of Covid-19. But it also showed that people can deal with a massive crisis like this. The effort and dedication of healthcare workers is awe-inspiring. Science proved very useful by developing save vaccines in record speed (just goes to show how much can be done when the political will and funding is there). Many scientist put their main interest to the side to help with PCR testing and other support to stem the crisis. But, we still need to be vigilant until most people are vaccinated and we can be confident that we don’t get any further outbreaks.

The pandemic has been difficult, and that is true whatever age you are. I would have found it so hard to be off school like you guys have, my research has been difficult because we got chucked out of the lab and older people couldn’t go out at all. I think it has highlighted good and bad things, at first Zoom was fun but now people seem sick of it, and that’s sad for me because I am away from my group and the only way we can chat is by Zoom so it feels like there’s a certain resentment to talk. It’s also been good because science and health services have been in the spotlight and lots of people realise how important they are, and we should not forget that.

The world has seen several pandemics before and we are not witnessing COVID-19. We will soon develop strategies including vaccination, lifestyle changes, caring more for nature, etc. to overcome this deadly disease.

Let’s do our bit and be more responsible. We all can beat it together.
