Thats a good question! Species dividing into two has happened many times in evolution, that is nothing particularly special. It usually happens for geographic or environmental reasons that prevent or discourage breeding between two branches of a species. The real question is why did humans become such an intelligent species whereas most apes are much less developed intellectually. I guess it is a combination of luck and the right environment that somehow led to humans brains developing very fast but I don’t really know much about it.
Its also not quite as simple as humans are descended from apes because there have actually been many species of ‘human’ (e.g. Neaderthals) all of which have now been displaced by our species, Homo Sapiens.
