Human babies are made when a sperm fertilises and egg. The sperm carries XY chromosomes and it is this that gives the baby its biological sex. Boys have XY chromosomes, whereas girls have XX. Babies (or fetuses) get the X chromosome from the egg and either the X or Y chromosome from the sperm.
